12. Language policy and locale reference
Panel language and typography language are independent. The interface supports English, German, French, Spanish and Czech. Typography can resolve language automatically from paragraph language, or use an explicit policy. Choosing a policy does not rewrite InDesign's language attributes or translate the document.
The current registry has 44 explicit entries: 43 language/regional choices plus Language-neutral (und), with automatic resolution as a separate mode. The choices include:
| Group | Registry IDs |
|---|---|
| English | en, en-US, en-GB, en-AU, en-NZ |
| Czech and Slovak | cs-CZ, sk-SK |
| German | de-DE, de-AT, de-CH |
| French | fr-FR, fr-CH, fr-CA |
| Italian | it-IT, it-CH |
| Spanish | es-ES, es-419, es-AR, es-CL, es-CO, es-PE |
| Portuguese | pt-PT, pt-BR |
| Other European choices | nl-NL, pl-PL, sv-SE, hu-HU, da-DK, nb-NO, fi-FI, ro-RO, hr-HR, sl-SI, el-GR, bg-BG, et-EE, lv-LV, lt-LT, ga-IE, mt-MT |
| Swiss multilingual | mul-CH |
| Japanese and Korean | ja-JP, ko-KR |
| Neutral | und |
Unknown or missing paragraph language falls back to neutral rather than borrowing an unsupported nearby regional convention. In mixed-language work, inspect representative paragraphs and confirm the resolved policy before drawing conclusions from quote, punctuation, number or date findings. Registry membership is not a blanket editorial certification for every convention in a language.
