14. Explore, Preview, Apply and Revert

The solver offers constrained alternatives for eligible composition findings. Its goals include reducing rivers, fixing widows/orphans, reducing overset, improving texture uniformity and balancing composition. A goal's name is not a guarantee that a safe candidate exists.

Explore fixes temporarily tests candidates against recomposed InDesign geometry and restores captured paragraph properties after each candidate. It can therefore be computationally expensive even though it is designed to leave no lasting change. Do not edit the target document while evaluation is running.

Candidates must improve the relevant goal while remaining inside configured tracking/scaling and side-effect budgets. Checks include line-count change, surrounding reflow, new widows/orphans, overset and hyphen stacks. A higher global score alone is insufficient.

  1. Select one compatible finding and use its offered Preview fix, or open the supported Explore workflow.
  2. Read the target, goal, measured Before/After values and any refusal reason.
  3. Determine whether the preview is panel-only or a live preview in InDesign. Typographic alternatives are panel-only; supported frame-geometry previews can be live.
  4. Choose Revert to finish without retaining a live change, or Apply to commit the selected alternative.
  5. Wait for verification/rescan and check the original issue and surrounding text.

Apply revalidates the document, scan freshness, target and captured properties. A typographic candidate changes supported target properties such as tracking, glyph scaling or permitted hyphenation. A frame-geometry candidate instead expands the verified terminal text frame's bottom boundary while preserving paragraph typography. Read the candidate's strategy before applying; neither strategy rewrites style definitions. Native Undo grouping is guarded and host-dependent. Read any grouping limitation rather than assuming every failure can be undone identically.

During a live preview, competing targets, scans and marks are locked until Apply or Revert. Logs remain available; Back to results returns to the preview. If the document changed or another Undo action intervened, stop and follow the refusal message instead of applying stale evidence.
