23. Full Style catalog, Override Map and colour tools
Choose a catalog section and understand its counts
Open Styles → Style catalog, then choose Paragraph, Character, Overrides or Style health. Paragraph and Character tables distinguish definitions from scoped usage. Their style paths include grouping context; two equal-looking names are not necessarily the same style identity. A selected style can show its based-on path, paragraph/range count, character count and page count where that evidence is available.
Catalog pages show up to 100 definitions. Use Previous styles / Next styles to reach the rest; paging is not a deletion or a smaller scan scope. A Definitions only catalog must not be interpreted as confirmed zero use. For character styles, incomplete/capped range capture prevents a trustworthy unused label.
Activating a style row selects it and explicitly shows supported uses. Checkboxes instead collect styles for Show selected. A row's Colour swatch is its identity colour; Heat is the independently measured frequency colour.
Show exactly the intended map
- Choose Paragraph or Character.
- Choose Style colours for identity or Frequency for relative usage.
- Select Whole document or Last scan. Last scan uses complete paragraphs represented by a fresh scan; it is not an arbitrary text substring. Whole document can work before Scan.
- Choose Show all, check styles and choose Show selected, or activate one style and use its supported selection action.
- Read the mapped scope and any skipped/unavailable targets. Use Clear / Clear Style Map to finish.
Frequency uses paragraph-use counts and character-range counts as separate scales; they are not directly interchangeable. It uses relative/logarithmic normalization, so one overwhelmingly frequent body style does not make every rarer style look identical. A single populated bucket is deliberately shown as frequent. Colours measure use, not defect severity, and changing Frequency does not overwrite saved identity colours.
More and colour editing
Open More → Display options to adjust Colour intensity or Heatmap intensity from 30–100%, then choose Set. Frequency also offers Accessible palette: On/Off and its rare-to-frequent legend. Refresh catalog explicitly refreshes live definitions; it is not a full replacement scan. Clear selected, Clear paragraph and Clear character selectively remove the corresponding active Style Map conditions, leaving other mapped styles where possible. They do not reset saved colour preferences or edit the style definitions. Use the map's general clear action to remove the complete active visualization.
Click an identity swatch to open the colour editor. Use its wheel, saturation, brightness or the six-digit HEX field. A valid colour can preview the existing owned marks in the layout. Enter accepts the current colour; Escape cancels/restores it. Leaving the popup or clicking outside normally accepts the current valid colour, so use Escape deliberately when you want cancellation. This edits diagnostic appearance, not a fill/stroke value in the underlying style definition.
Saved documents keep local colour preferences partitioned by document path; unsaved documents have session-only preferences. A moved or newly saved document can therefore have a different local association. Do not assume that a map is embedded into a customer file as portable plugin settings.
With Professional details enabled and identity mode selected, Export colours writes a colour-map JSON into its text area. Transfer it to the destination document and choose Import matching colours. Import matches the style kind and unique grouped path; missing, duplicate or ambiguous matches are skipped, and invalid packages are rejected. Inspect the matched/skipped feedback before showing the map.
Colour-map exports include style names/group paths. They omit document copy and the native document path, but are not content-free or identical to the diagnostic report. Review confidential style names before sharing.
Override sensitivity and Override Map
In Overrides, choose Strict, Normal or Conservative. Normal ignores No Break and language differences; Conservative also ignores tracking/kerning. The individual Ignore No Break, Ignore Language and Ignore Tracking / kerning controls can customize those exclusions. These are detection policy changes and require a new Scan. They do not remove formatting or repair an override.
Override Map is distinct from identity Style Map and Frequency. Show all overrides, Character and Paragraph highlight verified native ranges in fixed diagnostic classes: Critical → Geometric → Styling. Character marks use exact ranges; paragraph overrides use a whole native paragraph summary. When ranges overlap, the highest class wins rather than layering contradictory colours. Counts describe mapped ranges and can differ from the number of property findings. Use Clear Override Map for that visualization.
Automatic GREP, nested or drop-cap formatting with unresolved provenance is incomplete/review evidence, not automatically a confirmed local override. Style health, Meso / Macro consistency and hygiene summaries expose evaluated, partial and skipped evidence, including inheritance, consensus and protected-role gaps. Review-only advisories do not prove a repair and can intentionally carry no score penalty. Fonts, colours, languages and style definitions are outside the single-property reset path; see Chapter 10 for eligible numeric/boolean resets.
Meso / Macro consistency reference
The Styles reference includes the following ten consistency checks. They use captured scope, applied definitions and available evidence; a label's presence does not mean it was assessed successfully for every paragraph.
| Check | Evidence to review and important limit |
|---|---|
LEADING_DRIFT — Leading rhythm |
Effective style leading, with auto-leading normalization, or sufficient same-style consensus. Missing size/percentage evidence is a coverage gap. |
PARAGRAPH_SPACING — Paragraph spacing |
Before/after spacing against the applied style; unknown measurements are skipped. |
TRACKING_DRIFT — Tracking / kerning drift |
Tracking/kerning against the effective paragraph + character definition, rather than assuming intentional Character Styles are errors. |
INDENTATION_DRIFT — Indentation consistency |
Left, right and first-line indents against the applied style. |
MIXED_ALIGNMENT — Mixed alignment |
Alignment against the same applied style; different named styles can intentionally differ. |
HIERARCHY — Hierarchy audit |
Explicit heading/body roles in the same story, with enough body reference samples and comparable size/family/weight evidence. |
ROGUE_FONT — Rogue fonts |
Actual range family against its effective paragraph + character baseline. An intentionally styled family is preserved. |
VISUAL_STYLE_DRIFT — Visual style variants |
An advisory for excessive variants within one comparable style sample, not an automatic merge or cleanup operation. |
GRID_ALIGNMENT — Grid / layout alignment |
Baseline-grid policy and eligible unrotated frame/margin geometry; deliberate inset layouts require manual judgement. |
FONT_SATURATION — Font-family saturation |
A scope advisory when the known-family count is high; not a complete-document font inventory or instruction to remove families. |
Other Styles findings can flag extreme leading, tracking, scaling, baseline shifts, local colour/hyphenation differences and automatic-formatting conflicts. Read whether the finding is an exact confirmed override, an anomaly against a safety limit, or review-only evidence before using a repair card. Style hygiene intelligence surfaces recurring style-system concerns and unused/variant evidence for review; it does not delete styles or rewrite their definitions.
