24. Typography policy, protected profiles and semantic evidence

Open Typography → Language & rules for quick controls. Language chooses automatic paragraph resolution or an explicit locale. Rules opens the enabled-state list, category colour and current count for each rule. More reveals locale coverage and semantic evidence. Category chips and Review findings filter the shared queue; they do not start another scan.

Change policy without silently replacing a team standard

If Team profile is protected appears, quick language/rule controls are locked intentionally. Use Use as custom copy to detach explicitly into editable custom settings, or change the named standard through Settings and its versioned library workflow. Merely viewing a different locale is not permission to alter the active team profile.

After a quick policy/rule change, Settings changed warns that current results are outdated. Choose Rescan, wait for completion and confirm the accepted policy. Disabled, Not applicable to scanned locales, Not included and Enabled with zero findings are different states; only the last is even a candidate for a clean result, and it still requires sufficient coverage.

Control Effect
Language policy Governs Avellio analysis without rewriting InDesign language attributes.
Hyphen ladder limit Requires 2–8 consecutive hyphenated lines; the stored default is 3. It does not change InDesign's hyphenation settings.
Semantic strictness Controls evidence requirements for comparable consistency groups, independently of urgency.
Per-rule severity Assigns Low, Medium, High or Critical urgency to an enabled rule.
Minimum typography urgency Omits lower-urgency findings from the completed scan; this is not merely a display filter.
Exception governance Allows profile + document exceptions, profile-only exceptions, or no category exceptions.
Approved exception keys Stable category keys such as COPYFIT:SHORT_LAST_LINE or TYPOGRAPHY:STRAIGHT_QUOTE, not snippets or transient finding IDs.
Additional short words (house style) Up to 32 comma-separated words, 1–8 letters each. Uses the enabled one-letter/short-word rule for known non-Japanese/Korean locales; blank keeps locale defaults.

The core consistency policy is Conservative: at least 8 samples / 80% dominance, Normal: 5 / 70%, Strict: 3 / 65%. These thresholds qualify comparable locale/style groups; they are not confidence in factual correctness. Small or incomparable samples remain unassessed instead of manufacturing a prevailing convention.

Current source quick-control limitation: the middle Semantic strictness option in Language & rules → More is labelled Balanced, while the current handler accepts the stored Normal value. The mismatched middle option is not a reliable way to set that policy. Use Settings → Typography policy → Semantic strictness → Normal, explicitly apply/rescan and confirm the active policy. This is a source-confirmed UI mismatch; this manual does not claim a fresh native-host test or silently patch the plugin.

Read locale coverage before making an editorial conclusion

More shows resolved locales, inspected paragraphs, unrecognized language, incomplete contexts, no-break evidence and qualified/total semantic groups. Unrecognized language skips locale-specific rules instead of borrowing an unrelated regional convention. No pack produced a finding is not equivalent to no locale rules ran or all supported rules were certified.

The family split is deliberate: rivers, widows and visual short endings belong to White Space; formatting-system findings belong to Styles; Typography owns its editorial rules. A topic being absent from the Typography list can mean it belongs in another area rather than being missing from the product.
