26. Solver alternatives, live frame fit and saved proposals

The contextual Preview fix derives an eligible goal from the selected finding. The broader Explore interface can also expose Reduce whitespace rivers, Fix widows and orphans, Reduce overset, Improve texture uniformity and Balance overall composition. Changing the goal invalidates previous alternatives. An incompatible or unavailable target is refused instead of silently correcting a different finding.

Read the strategy and the deltas

Candidates are ranked by quality gain and then by smaller unrelated reflow. Each card identifies its parameters, rank, target/global changes and rejected-side-effect evidence. Review details is a panel-only comparison for a typographic alternative. Preview in layout is a guarded live preview for a supported frame-fit alternative.

Evidence What to compare
Quality Proposed score against the captured baseline; a gain alone is insufficient.
Target rivers / river burden Whether the selected target improves, separately from global river count.
Target widow/orphan Whether the target boundary problem is reduced rather than displaced.
Overset chars Hidden-character reduction in the target story.
Texture variance Relevant measured density variation, rather than a visual guess.
Line delta / unrelated reflows Change in line count and paragraphs outside the intended target.
Hyphen stacks New consecutive hyphen endings created by the proposal.
Frame expansion The proposed bottom expansion in points; paragraph typography is preserved by this strategy.

For eligible overset frame fit, the solver searches a bounded safe expansion of the terminal frame, not arbitrary frame reshaping. Inspect the actual frame, surrounding objects and editorial layout. Locked, stale or unsupported geometry can prevent a proposal. Do not assume every overset has a frame-fit solution.

During Live canvas preview, Apply keeps the visible verified result without adding a second mutation; Revert preview restores the guarded step. During review-only preview, Close review closes the panel comparison without a retained document change; Apply performs the separately revalidated mutation. These labels describe different effects even though both workflows are called preview.

Queue for review

Choose Queue for review to retain a supported proposal without committing it. A live preview is reverted first. The safe review queue keeps one candidate per story and offers Review / Review saved proposal to revalidate it later. It does not batch-apply changes.

Applying one proposal changes composition, clears the queued proposals and requires fresh inspection. A saved proposal is not guaranteed to remain available after a document/goal/configuration change. Reopen only the revalidated proposal; do not copy old parameter numbers into a different paragraph as a substitute for the guarded workflow.

Cache, rejections and side effects

The solver can reuse an exact matching retained result; a cache notice is a performance explanation, not reduced safety. A cache miss, stale result or changed target requires reevaluation. No safe improvement leaves the original composition intact and can show reasons such as insufficient gain, unchanged target, collateral reflow or unavailable guards.

The status safe alternative refers to the configured constraints and checked evidence. It is not an aesthetic guarantee. Review the actual document before keeping a live result, and finish Apply/Revert before changing documents, marking or starting another operation. If another action displaced the required Undo checkpoint, follow the refusal rather than repeatedly forcing Apply or Revert.
