7. White Space: rivers and composition

White Space combines Rivers, Texture and Copyfit. Use its quick filters to move between those findings. An area marked not included was excluded from the accepted run. Update required means existing evidence is no longer a safe basis for a new layout action.

A river is a supported corridor of whitespace through composed lines. Avellio uses actual InDesign geometry and scales relevant tolerances to local type size. It suppresses unstable zig-zag candidates rather than treating every visual coincidence as a river. Editorial intent, narrow measures and composition constraints still need human review.

  1. Select a river finding and read its location and severity.
  2. Use the available location/mark action to inspect the actual spaces.
  3. Compare the result with the intended column measure and typography.
  4. If an eligible Preview fix is offered, follow the controlled workflow in Chapter 14.
  5. If no safe alternative exists, make a deliberate manual layout decision and inspect again.

Do not adjust an unrelated paragraph just because it is the current InDesign insertion point. The selected compatible finding determines the repair target. River reduction must be supported by a measured improvement in the target's river count or burden, not merely a better global score.
