Typography Rules · practical reference

Manual indents and repeated tabs

Distinguish improvised alignment from deliberate text structure.

Understand the principle

Manual leading spaces and repeated tabs can become unstable when the typeface, measure or text changes. Paragraph-style indentation and explicit tab stops express repeatable alignment more clearly, while literal examples may need their original characters.

Look in Typography. The publication concept and a plugin issue identifier are related, but are not interchangeable.

Compare the intent, not only the characters

Pattern to review
Spaces or several tabs push body text into position.
Possible editorial outcome
A supported paragraph indent, tab stop or table structure where appropriate.

Schematic teaching example, not a plugin screenshot or a promise of automatic correction.

Review it in Avellio 2.0

Inspect tab stops and paragraph-style indentation before removing text. Identify the intended structure and change the alignment method deliberately. Reinspect the affected paragraphs and their reading order. Read Found and Suggested when offered, or Review in context. Check Text locale; the recommendation itself changes no text. After an intentional manual edit, inspect again.

Use the selected finding’s actual evidence and offered actions. If no suitable supported action exists, make a justified manual decision in InDesign or retain the occurrence. After an edit, inspect again and check nearby composition.

Read the plugin recommendation

Manual indent

Consider paragraph indents instead of leading spaces or tabs.

Read-only advice: verify meaning and locale, edit deliberately when justified, then inspect again.

Repeated tabs

Review tab stops or table structure instead of repeated tabs.

Read-only advice: verify meaning and locale, edit deliberately when justified, then inspect again.

When the difference can be intentional

Source code, imported structured text and deliberately tabular content can contain intentional spaces or tabs. A global deletion is not a structural repair.

What should I verify after deciding?

Preserve meaning and the intended design. If you edited the document, obtain fresh results for the intended scope and policy. If you kept the occurrence, record a supported review decision when useful. A smaller filtered count is not proof of a repair.
