Prepare a representative pass
Separate deliberate character styling from local formatting that has drifted away from the design system. Use a saved working copy, identify the intended active document, and check the inspection scope before interpreting a result. A profile is an inspection brief, not a command to repair the document.
Follow the workflow
- Identify the intended paragraph and character styles before changing anything. Use a saved copy of the document.
- Inspect Styles. Open Style catalog to understand definitions and usage; browsing the catalog alone is not a complete inspection.
- Compare the affected property with the baseline in the inspector. Check whether a named character style intentionally creates the difference.
- Use an Override Map for the supported diagnostic classes when helpful. Style identity colours and override-category colours communicate different things.
- For a confirmed eligible exact property, choose Preview reset. Review the temporary document change, then Apply or Revert deliberately.
- Inspect again. Check adjacent composition and verify that unrelated properties and style definitions still express the intended design.
How to recognize a finished pass
- The baseline is identified rather than assumed.
- Each retained reset concerns a supported exact local property.
- Intentional emphasis survives the review.
Where judgement matters
- An override can be intentional.
- A font name, ambiguous baseline or nested target can be review-only.
- Preview reset does not redefine a style or clear every override.
Does a finding mean I must change the document?
No. Check intent, scope, current evidence and available actions. Retaining an intentional occurrence can be the correct decision. Record the supported review status when useful; it does not edit the source text.
